About Writers on the Spit…

                                 Welcome. I am Ruth Marcus,

original host of Writers on the

Spit, a group of writers that began

                           as a fiction/memoir critique

group in 2010. After two years,

                           we started a second group—

Last Wednesday Poets, a poetry critique group.

That same year, we hosted a community event called Fourth Friday Readings which encouraged writers to share their writing talents.

Originally, the readings were at Rainshadow Coffee Cafe. Outgrowing the space, we moved to The Lodge in Sequim where the readings continue, every Fourth Friday. It is a FREE venue for writers to share 5-minute open mic readings that begin at 6:15 pm. Writers from the Olympic Peninsula are welcome to participate in these readings. There are also featured writers invited to read and promote their book(s). Judy Duncan, Heidi Hansen and Linda Myers currently host the Fourth Friday readings.

A special tribute:

One of the original members of Writers on the Spit was Jim Fisher (writer and professor of English at Peninsula College). He died in 2015. Jim encouraged many writers with his humor and commitment to the writing craft.

Two days before Jim's death in 2014, he wrote his final poem and submitted the manuscript which was published as The Big Casino: Posthumorous Poems, available at
